Internet Speeds

As most of us are aware, our internet connectivity and speeds leave a lot to be desired.  Highspeed rural internet is critical for economic development, engaging in the digital economy, and working and learning from home.  Currently, our federal government has announced a goal of 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds to all Canadians by 2030.

The Rural Municipalities Association of Alberta (RMA) is currently conducting internet speed tests to advocate for funding eligibility.  We would ask that each of you conduct a speed test of your internet service using a laptop or desktop computer.  You will need to ensure your test is conducted as follows to ensure accuracy of the test.

  • The computer should be connected to a modem/router with a direct cable connection, if possible.
  • Do not run other applications or devices while conducting tests as this will negatively affect the results.
  • Ask others to stop using the internet and/or streaming while running the test – The test should take less than one minute.
  • Internet speeds vary throughout the day, so take several tests at different times to help RMA assess peak times and loads.

To run the test, simply click the orange “Start” button on the speed test page, which is located at .

Thank you for your assistance.
